Haghartsin monastery

If you go from Dilijan towards the Teghut village through the reserved beech forest, the road itself leads to the beautiful monastery complex of the 11th-13th centuries. – Haghartsin. So, this is the pearl of the canyon. One of the most mysterious places in Armenia, immersed in the greenery of mountain forests.

So, the monastery is located in the upper reaches of the river of the same name (a tributary of the Aghstev River). 18 km from Dilijan. The territory of the medieval monastery is quite large. This includes the Church of St. Grigor (XI century), Church of St. Astvatsatsin (1281), Church of St. Stepanos (1244), the chapel of the XIII century, the burial vault of the royal family of Bagratids (XII century), the refectory (1248 g.). And various premises for monastic services erected in the XII-XIII centuries.

The Haghartsin complex located high in the wooded mountains. Where eagles found, and the name of the monastery translated from the Armenian language as “the game of eagles”. So, the image of an eagle – a proud strong bird – often found in the walls of Haghartsin. Thus, the sculptural group of the eastern façade of the Church of Surb Astvatsin (Holy Mother of God) depicts two men in monastic attire. And an eagle sitting on the dome of the church.
